FIREARMS, AMMUNITION AND EXPLOSIVES
The importation of firearms as accompanied passengers'
baggage is controlled by the South African Police Service, who are responsible
for the issuing of temporary import permits. Only after the Police Service
has issued such a permit, will you be allowed to pass through Customs.
As you will only import the firearm on a temporary basis, no duty or VAT
will be payable. You will also have to produce your respective country's
Firearm Certificate/Licence to the South African Police.
Upon arrival in South Africa, the firearm will be delivered
to the Police Service. You should approach the ground handling staff upon
arrival who will escort you to the Police Office to finalise the process
and to collect your firearm. The export procedure will be explained to
you at this stage.
Any additional information regarding import permits, etc.
can be obtained directly from the South African Police Service at Johannesburg
International Airport. The contact details are as follows
It may be advisable to contact the airline with which
you are travelling to establish the requirements for the export of these
firearms to South Africa.
In respect of a returning resident or a person who
enters the Republic for purposes of permanent residence or to remain temporarily
therein, the importation will be subject to production of an import permit
and firearm licence. Only after these two procedures are completed, may
the firearm be exported to South Africa.
